REPUBLIC OF SRPSKA CELEBRATES ITS PATRON SAINT’S DAY ON JANUARY 9

The Day of the Republic of Srpska and its patron saint’s day, St Stephen’s Day, is celebrated on January 9.The celebrations began on Sunday, with the laying of wreaths on a monument in Banjaluka, the capital of the Republic of Srpska, which monument is dedicated to soldiers of the Republic of Srpska who were killed in the war in Bosnia. On January 9, the Republic of Srpska celebrates its 20th anniversary. The patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Irinej, is paying a visit to Banjaluka, where he is to serve a holy liturgy in the Church of Christ.
The liturgy will be attended by the political leadership of the Republic of Srpska and also by Serbian President Boris Tadic and Serbian Deputy PM Ivica Dacic. The Republic of Srpska was founded on 9 January 1992 and its original name was the Serb Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Its constitution was enacted in February of the same year. When the Dayton agreement was signed on 21 November 1995, the Republic of Srpska was recognized as one of the two state-forming entities of Bosnia-Herzegovina, with 49% of the territory.
