NATION JOYFUL AS DJOKOVIC BECOMES TENNIS WORLD No.1

01.07.2011.

Serbia celebrated joyously on Friday as its national hero Novak Djokovic beat Frances’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 3-1 at the Wimbledon semi-finals and reached the top of the ATP tennis rankings as the world’s number one player.

Djokovic, 24, will play his first Wimbledon final on Sunday against the winner of the match between Spain’s Rafael Nadal and England’s Andy Murray. But regardless of the outcome, Djokovic has surged ahead of Nadal as world number one player.

Belgrade's streets were deserted during the three-hour match as people sat in cafes watching what was dubbed a “historic match” and rooting for their hero.

But as Djokovic scored the winning point, the capital went mad, with people singing and dancing in the streets, shooting in the air and blowing horns.

The atmosphere was similar in other Serbian cities, local media said. “The citizens of the Serbian capital for a moment forgot all their worries, rooting for the best Serbian tennis player in his historic climb to number one place in the world,” national news agency Tanjug said.

“This is the happiest day in my career,” Djokovic said after the match. “I have dreamed all my life to play in the Wimbledon finals, but I hope the real celebration is yet to come,” he added.
